Rutger
Canada is amazing. Rain, wind, cold, blizzards, wilderness, whales. Lovely and crafty people. Smart, kind, together. Loved MONTREAL. It was the first city I visited as a sailor in 1959.

Rutger
Last time was the Roseanne show. She's wonderful&wild.

Is Spanish one of the languages you can speak?

Rutger
Nada espanol. I practice a little with the lady who cleans our house in LA. She laughs at my Spanish. She comes from Guatemala.

Do you feel embarassed when shooting sex scenes?

Rutger
I find a lot of drama in them but not the kind of drama that I learned in dramaschool. They are a bit awkward and rather useless. We know what happens in bedrooms. There are other programs if you like. Do people really give a fuck?

Are you working now or vacationing?

Rutger
Little vacation. Much preparation for the future.

When not travelling, where do you call home?

Rutger
The Bermuda Triangle.

Do you get to see your sisters or other family members often?

Rutger
Possibly, once a year.

Rutger
On the little piece of land that I own there are many creatures. A white churchowl,snake families, bugs,hundreds of different birds, small bats, deer, rabbits, herons, buzzards, stray cats, porcupines, frogs and they are terrorized on occasion by an old and slightly deaf but combative Jack Russell. My land is their home and I consider all of them my pets.

I think so.

Rutger
I checked the place out. It's just like another hotel. You don't want to live there. You want to live here. In case of doubt one can of course work on both but I think we have already arrived. Let's have lunch.

I really like to shoot a film once.

What's attracting you in Juliette Binoche? Which are your favourite films she shot?

Rutger
Her tail, her bum, her wet doggy nose? I think she's superfab. A mountainclimbing actress, attractive as heaven and hell.(see above). I admire her. I don't feel the need to specify. Kieslowski.

Did you like the music for Ladyhawke?

Rutger
I liked everything else in the movie. The music was trying hard to get something most of which was to please a then younger audience. To me entertaining has nothing to do with pleasing.

Rutger
It's difficult to be anybody's wife. Ups/downs etcetc.

Rutger
Why, of course, the golfball.

I've been there. In the rough. Great whisky, peat in the wind.

Rutger
I feel, pretty much, I got more out of them than they got out of me. But it was a very nice job. The good, bad & ugly all eat out of my hand.

Rutger
I'm a pretty straight pussy when it comes down. But I agree,it can be a cumbersome design.

Rutger
I miss the ocean and the plants but they are lousy travellers.

If you couldn't be an actor, what profession would you want to be?

Rutger
A vet.

Friends.

Rutger
A handful.

Which are the directors you have worked with, with whom you would like to work again, and why?

Rutger
The question is how much time do I have. I liked most of them. There are so many I haven't worked with.

Is your wife always travelling with you?

Rutger
She tends to want to stay out of the picture but comes and goes as she pleases. We are often alone. But love each other more than any alternative.

You told Theo Van Gogh a few years ago in an interview that you were busy with directing a film. You were going to play a surgeon in it. What happened to that film?

Rutger
It was called"PARADISE PAGES". A screenplay I had optioned to play and direct. Diane Keaton&Miranda Richardson had expressed interest. As things started to become more and more serious there where a lot of problems with the rights and I ran out of patience with many, many lawyers. I had to let it go. Very sad.

Just wanted to ask, do you think you've been offered better, more interesting - or maybe less predictable roles since you turned 40?

Rutger
As a large portion of the moviemaking world seems to be attracted to visual chewing-gum, less interesting wants to be the answer. But even chewing-gum gets old. Patience and an open mind.

Since you are a very private person, why do you sometime give interviews in your home?

Rutger
The exception proves the rule.......

I like. But low profile chess.

When you filmed Escape from Sobibor, did you have a chance to visit the site of the camp?

Rutger
The camp was destroyed by the Germans.

You mentioned that you like a lot Omega Doom. Why?

Rutger
It was/is a delicious attempt to make a strange and unusual movie in 12 days.

Rutger
I'll be retired when it is too late (replicant's talk).

Rutger
I play people. They are never the same. They are fluid. The heavier chunks are mine.

In a love relationship, habit is the great killer of all - a look is enough to understand each other, but it can also divide. For you maybe it's not been like that. Considering the many opportunities you probably have, have you ever been tempted to betray your partner?

Rutger
Like watching snow after a nuclear meltdown.

Gifts may be genetically given but what matters is the skills on how to liberate them.
