From June 18th through 28th 2009 the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory organised for the third time a ten-day international Masterclass in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in which Rutger shares his knowledge, vision and passion for the art of filmmaking with thirty ambitious filmmakers from all over the world. In ten days they make 12 short films under the inspired leadership of Rutger and a team of international experts.
“Two years ago my dream came true. Since a visit to SUNDANCE 20 years ago I cherished a wish to make this happen. That the dream is sustainable and that we can repeat it again is fantastic. We are therefore very grateful to our subsidizers and sponsors.” - Rutger Hauer
During the Masterclass the participants were formed in teams consisting of a director, cinematographer, producer, editor and actors. Together they formed a production team. In ten days each team produced two short films that were premiered at the end of the Masterclass. While going through the process of making both films, the participants learnt to get rid of the more conventional ways of filmmaking and thus learnt to find their own personal path in filmmaking. Their flexibility and ability for both creative thought and collaboration were tested and challenged by numerous obstacles and unexpected turns.
During those ten days the team members participated in workshops and lectures of all possible facets of filmmaking. Previously these have been given by a range of international renowned film professionals like Anton Corbijn, San Fu Maltha, Paul Ruven, Molly Stensgaard (Denmark) and John Putch (USA).
At the end of the production line 12 exciting new short films, shot by an international team of young adventurous professionals were created.
On Monday, June 29, 2009 all their films had their public premiere at the Kriterion Theater in Rotterdam, introduced by Rutger Hauer.
Participants in the two earlier successful Master classes originated from a range of countries including New Zealand, North and South America, Germany, England, Italy, Estonia, France and the Netherlands.
The Rutger Hauer Filmfactory was supported by the Rotterdam Media Fund, Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, SNS Reaalfonds, Filmfund/HGIS, Dienst Kunst en Cultuur Gemeente Rotterdam, Binger Filmlab, Hogeschool INHOLLAND and works in partnership with I've Seen Films - International Film Festival.
