Plot:
A gripping suspense thriller about a lonely, young artist, Babee, who is thrown into a world of lust, deceit and murder when he befriends his new neighbors, Keith and Vera.
Babee's innocent world turns upside-down when Keith is involved in a life-threatening accident and is pronounced brain dead. Feeling somewhat responsible, Babee is compelled to help Vera take care of him. This makes Babee's beautiful young friend, El, who openly has a crush on him, very jealous.
As Babee becomes attracted to Vera, he soon discovers that Keith is faking his illness in order to settle the score with a few friends who have betrayed him - and Babee is his only confidant. Unbeknownst to all except for Babee, Keith kills two close friends - disguising the murders as suicides.
As Babee falls in love with Vera, he confesses his feelings to Keith who begins to torment the young artist. Babee's rage leads to the shocking climax which reveals all - did Keith mastermind the whole plot in order to be with the sexy El...or did Babee commit the murders as his twisted mind conjured up the entire chain of events?
Notes:
Rutger worked very closely to director Shone Kirkpatrick. He explained, "I convinced the director to shoot an alternative ending which I co-wrote and which makes more sense".
Rutger sums up the film by saying, "It's a hell of a story with a pure heart. And a story from hell as well..on earth though. The shoot progressed with lightning, speed and laughter. I really had a blast of genius doing this part".
"Lying in Wait" premiered at the '2000 Cannes Film Festival' to critical acclaim.
